Voice has power. Voice works. Always and everywhere. It makes transparent who we are and lets us hear what we are thinking and feeling at the moment. Voice connects – or divides. As soon as we open our mouths, we communicate through the very individual sound of our voice. Depending on how our voice sounds, we seem very good or not so good. Our voice unconsciously, but very powerfully, provides sympathy – or the opposite. It influences and convinces. Be it in customer contact, in job interviews, in negotiations, in media appearances, presentations or on the phone. And of course in her private life. So voice is immensely important. By the way, how is it that we have exactly the voice we have?
The most important influencing factors of the voice?
On the one hand, there are our role models – parents and other role models. Children not only learn language by listening, but also how to use their voices and even how they speak. Has it ever happened to you that you thought you were talking to your mother on the phone, but the daughter was on the other end of the line? Both can sound confusingly similar...
A second important influencing factor is our posture. A compressed, slumped body will produce an equally pressed, barely sustaining voice. Facial expressions and gestures or the absence of both also play an important role here.
Another element, of course, is a person's temperament. Extroverted, very present people rarely have quiet, barely audible voices.
Breathe properly and then speak! You will notice the difference immediately. And last but not least, it comes down to our own hearing. It is important for voice control to hear oneself. As a result, we automatically speak louder in a noisy environment, but immediately become quieter again in a quiet environment.
My special tip for the Day of the Voice:
This is how you can influence the voice in the short term:
Throughout the day, pay more attention to what makes your voice sound particularly pleasant or less pleasant. Is it your feelings, is it your current body language, or even the focus of your attention? Because only when you can hear that your voice is changing have you laid the foundation for its conscious use. Experiment playfully, write down your experiences and above all, stay tuned.
I wish you a "good voice" at all times.
Yours, Arno Fischbacher
