Speaking in a room-filling and understandable way

EXPERIENCE THE ROOM IN SOUND

When people talk to each other, all information is transmitted in the form of sound. At the same time as the "sound mush" (the acoustic offer), countless other stimuli flow into the human being every second (via the eye, ear, nose, skin, etc.). So the brain has a lot to do to filter out the most important information and process it consciously.

You will therefore help your conversation partners a lot if what you say is easy to understand. Whether you're speaking in front of a larger group or speaking out in a meeting, if you manage to fill the room with your voice and invite the audience into your "sound space," that's already an important step in getting attention.

In order to be able to assess how loudly you should speak so that everyone understands you, I recommend that you train your auditory perception. Take advantage of opportunities outside of work and try this out in different rooms. How does the sound differ, for example, in the bathroom, in the kitchen or in the stairwell? Play with different locations in the same room as well. What changes when you stand in the middle, in a third or in the corner of a room?

Practical tip

More sound volume does not have to lead to a sore throat. If you feel that you are building up pressure in your throat to get louder, the wrong muscles of your body are working. Instead, use the power of your diaphragm. Remember the good point of view Online tip 1 . It helps you speak powerfully without becoming hoarse.

Making vocals sound longer

The next step is to move from "Eeee" to the word and also send the vowels into the room in an elongated way to sound out the spatial sound. A good practice tool for this is the long-drawn-out speech of a Litany .

Holding the power of the "Eeee"

Let your voice be controlled by your ear. It will tell you when the room is well filled with the sound of your voice. In contrast, the eye or direct eye contact tempts you to direct your voice only up to this point. Instead, choose the wide-angle view, where you can also see the edge of your field of vision.

The advantages of sonorous speech

  • Above all, speak the first words of a sentence in an emphatically sonorous way. In this way, you increase attention and become more present at the same time.
  • The meaning of your sentences for your listeners arises primarily from the tone of voice. The longer you let the vowels sound while speaking, the better you will be understood.
  • Vowels transmit the emotional information of what is spoken. It is the information that the brain is looking for in order to understand the message as a whole.

The Magic 1st Word

Of course, you can't stand in the room during the meeting or presentation and sound an "Eeeee" with your eyes closed to try out the sound. Your autopilot will also become powerful, making it a little more difficult to speak in the "chest tone of conviction" for a long time. But there is another trick that also appeals to the curiosity reflex of your conversation partners.

  • Pronounce the first word sonorously and clearly, let the vowels sound. It may seem a little too loud to you. After all, you want to be heard by everyone present and by the four walls of the room.
  • After the first word, pause for a moment and listen to the "echo". This pause allows you to perceive the reaction of others.
  • Only then continue speaking at a normal pace.

With the "magic 1st word" you have your alternative to the "Eeeee" when you are in a meeting or in a meeting. At the same time, you have a powerful tool at hand to get attention. If you speak up, but then pause for a moment, send a "warning signal". As a rule, your interlocutors will do the same and try to hear what just caught your attention. This way you have your listeners fully with you.

Practical tip

Every sentence, every thought begins anew with a first syllable or a first word. This is what makes speaking professionals use this tool so successfully. Try it out: Even if this technique sounds highly unusual to you at first, you seem authentic and particularly present to your listeners. Because you sound more vocally appealing and speak less quickly.

Possible outcome: Her contribution seems more haunting and credible. Your listeners will grasp your message more quickly. For more complex topics, there are fewer questions.

In two weeks you will receive your fourth online tip "Warming-up for professionals" .
