Occasion of the "Day of Reading Aloud", ORF Salzburg asked me for an interview. What does it take to present a text expressively? Listen to my thoughts and practical tips here:

What makes reading aloud a practical voice exercise

Do you allow yourself to pull out the stops that your vote actually would have? In everyday life, we often fall into comfortable speaking habits that make it difficult for our conversation partners and listeners to stick with it and follow. Reading something to your partner, your children - or your elderly parents can not only bring great joy. Reading aloud is a wonderful way to explore the facets of the own voice and courageously push the boundaries of the usual way of speaking.

How to turn any text into your voice exercise

Reading aloud is not the same as reading aloud. That can sound pretty monotonous. Try the following variants and notice how your voice, modulation and effect changes:

  • Slip into different roles. Especially when you read something to children, it works particularly well. What does the green Cookie Monster sound like? What does the little shy bunny sound like? What does the elephant sound like when the raven has snatched the food away from it?
  • If you now say, but my children are already too big to read you bedtime stories: Read the passage from the book you are reading right now that particularly impresses you right now! Allow yourself a different tone, be more insistent – or very succinct ... play with your expression!
  • The easiest thing is to read the breaking news of the daily newspaper aloud – see above for your expression!

What do you need to present a text expressively?

Respect every word. Say unusual words intentionally with emphasis and slowly. Do you want to try it out right away? Then read aloud right away:

"It's one of those things with authenticity. Complicated is different from complex. Speaking voice and voice break are also two different things. Read quietly, it goes very smoothly, but as soon as you read aloud, you stumble over letters and fall out of character!"

Now is the perfect time to train your vocal expressiveness!

Perhaps you are also spending much more time with your family than usual due to the current situation. Since this is not entirely voluntary for all of us, it may also be a fun, welcome and enriching change for you to prefer good old reading aloud instead of TV and the Internet.

I wish you pleasant minutes and hours and lots of interesting experiences with the Power of your voice !
